Image: On a sunny day in 1944, on the Eastern front, Leutenant
Karl Heinz Nebel of JG51, is testing "Yellow 5" of Bf 109G6
just fitted with a new engine. Taking a rare opportunity away from the
normal stresses of battle, Nebel strayed across the Russian lines and
so began a most extraordinary series of events.
Out of the blue, two Yak 3 Russian fighters appeared. Alone, and over
enemy lines, Nebel firewalled his 109's throttle and dived for the clouds
below. Bursting through the cloud base, he checked his "6"
to see if he had lost his pursuers, only to be stunned to see them collide
in a fireball of tangled aircraft after following him through the clouds.
